The Wine Garden Recommends with Simpsons Wine Estate's CEO

Discover Kent’s best kept foodie secrets, hidden gems and wine recommendations with all the insider information from the Wine Garden of England’s food and wine experts…

This month, tantalise those taste buds as Charles Simpson from Simpsons Wine Estate shares his local recommendations for the tastiest dishes, finest wines and stunning spots in the county…

What might we find you doing on a standard day at Simpsons?

There is no standard day!  Ruth and I run two wine businesses in two countries.  Depending on the day we could be in the Languedoc, France or Kent, UK.  We’ve built both these businesses from scratch so get involved in all aspects of our business from viticulture all the way to blending, bottling and even marketing and sales.

Tell us about your favourite Kentish spot to enjoy a glass of wine…

If not tasting wines in our new Glass House tasting room then we are often found sipping some English Sparkling Wine at the Wild Goose at the Good Shed in Canterbury.

If you were throwing a dinner party, where would you source your ingredients?

Again the Good Shed after enjoying some English Sparkling Wine. We could also be found at Macknade’s in Faversham looking for fine ingredients.

Which Kentish chefs and wine makers should we be keeping our eye on in 2019?

Dan Smith at the Fordwich Arms! Simpsons Wine Estate…2019 is our year with the launch of 5 new English still wines and our first Classic Cuvée English Sparkling Wine.

If someone had booked you a weekend in Kent, where would you be hoping they had booked for your dream night’s stay?

The Pig In Bridge, which opens in May 2019

When you have visitors, what’s does your go-to Kent itinerary include?

A vineyard and winery tour, including a trip down our winery helter-skelter slide (the only one in the world) followed by lunch at the Fordwich Arms in our village.

The suns out, where can we find you hiking or strolling at the weekend?

In the Garrigue hills behind our Domaine in France or on the Kent Downs that surround our vineyards in Barham.
