Hush Heath Estate
“We feel it a privilege that, within its five-hundred-year history, we’ve had an opportunity to care for Hush Heath, develop its vineyards and orchards, and support it in making its mark on the landscape of English wine.” Richard & Leslie Balfour-Lynn, Producers
Hush Heath Estate is a 400-acre family owned Tudor Estate in the heart of the ‘Garden of England’, Kent, with vast ancient oak woodlands, vineyards, apple orchards and wildflower meadows. At its heart lies Hush Heath Manor, built in 1503, home to the Balfour-Lynn family since the 1980s. With family values at its core, the Estate combines stewardship and conservation with an unrivalled spirit of hospitality. Often described by visitors as a ‘hidden gem’, those working for the Estate are passionate about the key part they play in its future success.
The state-of-the-art winery was completed in 2010, and is currently undergoing an expansion to double the size of the winery to produce 500,000 bottles of wine per year and creating a new tasting room able to seat up to 200 visitors. This exciting extension, which will house the Shop (Cellar Door), Visitor Centre and a larger space for corporate and private events, will be unveiled in August 2018. Hush Heath remains open to all, and visitors are welcome at the Estate seven days a week, from 10am to 5pm, including Bank Holidays, with the option to take a complimentary Self-Guided Tour and enjoy a walk-in tasting. The charm of Hush Heath Estate can further be appreciated on a bookable tasting tour.
The first vineyards were established on the Estate in 2002 and are predominantly planted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, although more recently plantings of Bacchus and Pinot Blanc have been added. The Estate has a distinct ‘House Style’, producing wines of great elegance and purity, showcasing a soft mousse with a fruit forward approach and a refreshing, lively acidity. Hush Heath wines are nationally and internationally award-winning and include a sparkling range under the ‘Balfour’ brand and still wines under the ‘Hush Heath Estate’ brand. Fruit from the Estate’s apple orchards is used to make the ‘Jake’s Kentish Cider’ range and, reflecting a constant drive for product innovation, two truly unique new Sparkling Apple Wines. In 2015 and 2016 respectively, two pubs local to the winery, the Goudhurst Inn and the Tickled Trout, both with boutique hotel rooms, were added to the Estate’s portfolio to take advantage of the increase in visitor numbers and the need for good locally sourced food, drink and rooms - both sites are explicitly linked back to the vineyard and winery.
Everyone working at Hush Heath shares the same goals and vision as the Balfour-Lynn family. From our vineyard management team, our winemakers, sales and administration team there is a determination and pride in growing the best possible fruit, maintaining Hush Heath Estate to an immaculate standard and producing top quality wines and ciders. All these aspects, and most importantly the passion shared by everyone, reflect the Hush Heath brand as a premium producer.
